The family temple of the Kanazawa Hojos, with an elegant garden in the Jodo style

Shomyo-ji Temple is the family temple of the Kanazawa Hojos, and is said to have been founded by Sanetoki Hojo in the Kamakura period. In front of the golden hall there is a Jodo-style garden, at the center of which there is a pond called Ajigaike. Visitors to the garden can enjoy the beautiful sight of a red arched bridge, a flat bridge and the trees around the pond reflected on the water. Seasonal flowers make the view even more beautiful, with cherry blossoms in spring, yellow irises in early summer and autumn foliage in the fall. The adjoining Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko preserves and displays a large amount of the temple's cultural property. The renowned Evening Bell is also located in Shomyo. It was drawn in Hiroshige Utagawa's picture series "Eight Views of Kanazawa", which became very popular for their depictions of scenic spots in the region.
