[Jiyuken Namba Main Branch]
The sophisticated "Meibutsu Curry" first served in the Meiji Period.
Jiyuken is a long-established restaurant serving western-style cuisine that opened in 1910. Served with the curry mixed in with the rice, Meibutsu Curry is needless to say one the most famous specialties of Namba. The style originates from the days before tools such as rice cookers to keep rice warm, when the chef who established the restaurant came up with the idea of mixing the curry with the rice in order to serve piping hot curry. The curry sauce is prepared by simmering a broth of beef tendon and tomato puree for at least two days, before simply adding beef and onion to complete the curry. The rice is then fried in the curry roux, and a special soup stock is added. Finally, a raw egg is cracked on the top. Voila! Mix the raw egg in well to create a mild but rich flavor.
