[Hakone Museum of Art]
A ceramics museum whose maples are spectacular in the fall
This art museum's main focus is Japanese ceramics, from Jomon pottery to works of the Edo period. Invaluable pieces such as the Haniwa (terracotta tomb ornament) of a Crowned Male Figure, an Important Cultural Property, are on display, and visitors can see excellent works of jars, vases, and pots produced in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods in places like Seto and Tokoname. The museum grounds include the Moss Garden, containing roughly 130 kinds of moss and 200 maple trees, among other gardens, which together comprise a nationally-recognized Registered Monument, and visitors can enjoy beautiful maple leaves come November. At the teahouse Shinwatei, museum-goers can enjoy matcha green tea and sweets as they gaze at the Moss Garden. (Fee required.) Feed your soul with pottery and strolls through beautiful nature.
