[Odawara Castle Ajisai Hanashobu Matsuri]
Enjoy irises and hydrangeas in the midst of castle ruins
A flower festival held in Odawara Castle Park. Every year in June, visitors to Odawara Castle can enjoy a contest between flowers, as some 7,000 irises (hanashobu) come into bloom by the East Moat and around 2,100 hydrangeas (ajisai) open their petals on the moat's slopes. A popular feast for the eyes is the landscape woven by the flowers against the background of the Tokiwagi-bashi, a bridge across the moat. The flowers are illuminated at night, affording yet another treat: the sight of them bathed in dreamy light.
