[Former Japanese National Railway's Taketoyoko Station Turntable]
Japan's one-and-only railway turntable with two perpendicular tracks
This railway turntable with two perpendicular tracks was installed in Taketoyoko Station building (the terminal station of a freight branch line of the former Japan National Railways Taketoyo Line) in 1927. This kind of turntable has two tracks that cross at right angles, which makes it quicker and easier to change the direction of the train. There were just a few of them in Japan, and the one in Taketoyo Town is said to be the only example to have survived to the present. After going out of service in 1965, the turntable was found in ruins by a local elementary school student in 1999. It was subsequently repaired, and became a piece of industrial heritage that conveys some of the history of railroads. In Taketoyo Town Community Exchange Center near the turntable, there is a diorama that recreates the historic scenery of Taketoyo Town so visitors can see what it was like in the past.
You can see the turntable with two perpendicular tracks up close at Tenshadai Pocket Park.
Upper left: Taketoyo Town Community Exchange Center also has restaurants and a store that sells local products. Upper right: In the history and industry exhibition corner, there is a diorama that shows what the turntable used to be like. Bottom:Taketoyo Town is famous for miso-making, and part of the exhibition space in the center has been designed to look like a miso storehouse.
