One of the three great heavenly gods of Nagoya, and home to a "money washing" shrine
This Shinto shrine was founded by Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the feudal lord of the Owari clan, in the mid-Edo period, at a time when scholarly pursuits were actively encouraged. Michizane Sugawara is enshrined as the main deity. Since the shrine is located in the unlucky northern-east quarter of the Owari region (Nagoya Castle), it is also revered as a guardian deity that watches over all directions to ward off misfortune. The "Hokokiganushi" is also worshiped at the shrine. It is said that wishes will come true if you turn the face of the ox in the direction you want to make a wish in, and put a bell on the statue of Lord Michizane that sits on the ox. The Yamada Tenmangu precinct also houses Kogane-jinja Shrine, which is famous for its "money washing". It is believed that good fortune, happiness, and business prosperity will come to you if you purify your money or lottery tickets with the sacred water (goshinsui).
Yamada Tenmangu is popularly known as one of the three great heavenly gods of Nagoya, along with Ueno Tenmangu and Sakura-tenjinsha Shrine.
Upper left: Turn the base of the Hokokiganushi so the "errand ox" faces the direction you want to make a wish in, and put a bell on the statue. Upper right: Disease or injury afflicting any part of your body will supposedly be cured if you touch the same part on the Nadeushi ox statue. Bottom: Lots of people come to Kogane-jinja Shrine to pray that they will win the lottery.
