[Tagata Jinja Shrine]

World's strangest festival draws crowds of foreign tourists

Tagata Jinja Shrine is home to an ancestral deity who originally cultivated the land in this area. This deity has been worshiped as an ancestral deity of rich harvest and flourishing business. Honen Festival, held at the shrine on March 15th every year, is known as one of the world's most unique festivals. In this one-of-a-kind festival, an enormous, 2-meter-long phallus is carried around on a portable shrine and marched through the town. You cannot see a sight like this anywhere else. Many people from both Japan and overseas visit the shrine to catch a glimpse of this festival, creating an easygoing atmosphere. If you would prefer to visit the shrine without a frenzy of activity, you can visit on days other than the Honen Festival. This spot is thought to possess mystical powers; in particular, it grants luck for rich harvests and the prosperity of one's descendants.
