[Shippo Art Village]
A museum complex with the theme of Owari Shippo enamelware
Cloisonné, known as Shippo in Japan, is a technique in which a multicolored vitreous enamel is baked onto a metal surface. This style of enamelware has existed since before the Common Era, but its history in Japan began in 1833, when Kaji Tsunekichi discovered the technique used to create it. The Owari region (modern-day western Aichi) then became the center of Shippo production in Japan. It is this Owari Shippo whose wonders this museum wishes to convey to you. Through admiring art pieces, observing the crafting process, and more, you can learn about Shippo from many different angles. You can even see a professional create a piece of Shippo enamelware before your very eyes. Those who want to try making one themselves are invited to try a workshop (fee required). You can create an original piece and take it home that day.
