[Owari Tsushima Tenno Matsuri]
A riverside festival where the mood of summer is colored by festival boats
With more than 600 years of tradition, "Owari Tsushima Tenno Matsuri" is considered to be one of Japan's three great riverside festivals. The "Yoi Matsuri" and "Asa Matsuri" ("Evening Festival" and "Morning Festival", respectively), in which festival boats sail down the Tenno River, has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan under the title "Danjiribune Gyoji". ("Danjiribune" is a rare word for the festival boats, and "gyoji" means event.) A particularly fantastical spectacle is to be seen during the Yoi Matsuri, when the Tsushima Gosha, five festival boats bearing a total of 500 paper lanterns, are rowed across the river to the sound of flutes. It was registered as a UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage in December 2016.
"Owari Tsushima Tenno Matsuri" is known as one of the major river festivals of Japan
