[Important Cultural Property Iwashina School]

A precious school building that evokes the Western-style architecture of the early Meiji period

Iwashina School was an elementary school that was founded in 1873 in Matsuzaki Town, Kamo County. Completed in 1880, the school building is an architectural masterpiece, and has been designated by the national government as an Important Cultural Property. Its design incorporates Western-style architectural elements (such as arched windows and a balcony) into an overall architectural style typical of a Japanese shrine or temple: namako walls (black slate walls with white plaster grids), a karaha-style gable roof, and so on. Inside the school building, the exhibits include a classroom and the principal’s office reproduced just as they were during the Meiji period, and documents and materials about Matsuzaki, which once flourished as a region that produced early-season silk. Try-it-yourself workshops for making dolls out of cocoon balls are held throughout the year (first-come, first-served basis, additional fee required), and are an excellent opportunity to have fun while learning about the history and culture of silk cocoons.
