[Numazu Port Observation Water Gate Viewo]
This water gate with an observation deck commands a 360-degree panoramic view
Viewo is a tide gate constructed as a measure against tsunamis coming in from Numazu Port's outer harbor. At 40 meters wide and 9.3 meters tall, the gate is huge even all by itself. It is said that it can protect about 9,000 people. The supporting pillars on either side of the gate are massive and tall, too, so the facility is usually open to the public as an observation deck. Take the elevator to go up to about 30 meters above ground level, and you will find an observation gallery that offers a 360-degree panoramic view. The two observation galleries are joined by a connecting bridge. On a fine day, you can see Mt. Fuji, Mt. Ashitaka, the Southern Alps, Suruga Bay stretching out below you, and more.
