[Toi Gold Mine]
A tourist mine where visitors can learn about gold mining and experience the allure of gold
From the Edo period to the Showa period, Toi Gold Mine was among the most productive gold mines in Japan. The mine was closed in 1965 and opened to the public as a tourist mine in 1972. The way gold was mined back in the Edo period is reenacted inside the tunnel and visitors can experience what it was like to work in the gold mine in those times. At the Gold Museum, products of the gold mine and a diorama that shows the scenery of the surrounding area are on display. Visitors can also touch a 250 kg giant gold bar, listed in the Guinness World Records, and learn about the world of this mineral that has fascinated people since ancient times. You can also try panning for gold if you want to find some gold yourself (additional fee required). You can take home any gold you find.
