[Henjoin Temple]

An ages-old Shingon Buddhist temple whose principal object of worship is "Mikaeri Kobo Daishi", reluctant to part from someone

Henjoin Temple was built in the early Heian period by Kobo Daishi on his way to the Kanto region. Before continuing on his way, he carved three sculptures of himself expressing the past, present, and future, from photinia wood. One of these sculptures, "Mikaeri Kobo Daishi", is of the monk looking back, reluctant to part from someone. It is still enshrined at Henjoin Temple as its principal object of worship. (The sculpture is normally not viewable by the public. It is exhibited to the public on the 21st day of the third month of the lunar calendar.) After praying in the main hall, try walking around the underground "kaidan", a sacred space where the monks take their vows. It is said that if you pray to Kobo Daishi in the darkness, you will be blessed. On the 21st of every month of the lunar calendar, the anniversary of the famed monk's death, stalls line up along the approach to the temple, and the grounds are crowded by worshipers.
