Explore an island dotted with pieces of art
Sakushima Island, floating in roughly the middle of Mikawa Bay, is about a 20-minute boat ride from Isshiki Port. It shot to fame for the artwork exhibited throughout the island. One of the most popular pieces is the "Ohirune (Nap) House". If you sit inside this dark-colored box and listen to the sound of the waves and feel the ocean breeze, you just might discover a feeling of oneness with nature. Other artwork includes the secret hideout, "Apollo", modeled on Apollo 11, and "Seagull's Parking Lot" where flocks of seagulls flutter in the sea breeze. Pieces of ancient pottery from the Jomon period, as well as shell mounds from the Yayoi period, have been unearthed from the geologic stratum, and exploring these vestiges of the past is another good way to enjoy the island.
