Yumekyobashi Castle Road | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

Maibara Station

[Yumekyobashi Castle Road]

Take a walk down a street lined with souvenir shops and restaurants housed in traditional townhouses like those of the Edo period

Right in front of the Kyobashi Bridge, which stretches over the moat of Hikone Castle, is a street lined with traditional Japanese-style houses that were reconstructed to look like they belonged in the Edo period. White walls, gable roofs, black lattice frames painted with soot and red Bengala pigment—standing here, you will certainly feel like you are in a real castle town. A number of interesting shops line the streets. Highlights include a lifestyle shop, a shop specializing in Hikone candles, and a ceramics shop making and selling goods that have to do with the Hikone screen—a genre painting from the early Edo period. There are also restaurants that serve sweetfish caught in Lake Biwa and delicious Omi beef, Japanese confectionery shops where you can find Hikone's specialty local sweets, and more. This is the perfect place to find and enjoy the local specialties of Hikone. Take your time strolling around and having a look inside these shops, and enjoy the Edo-period atmosphere.
