[Yokaro (Mackerel somen)]

Nagahama's local specialty, filled with parental love and the spirit of hospitality

In the Kohoku region, north of Lake Biwa, there was once a custom in which parents would deliver highly nutritious gilled mackerel to their married daughters, who were busy with farm work in spring. Saba somen—mackerel and somen noodles cooked together—is a traditional dish that has been passed down as a typical meal during the busy farming season. In times past, it was also a festive dish served to visitors in the region's traditional Nagahama Hikiyama Festival. Yokaro is a restaurant made from a renovated merchant house built over 150 years ago. The restaurant serves saba somen, with grilled mackerel cooked in a sweet, savory soy sauce-based broth, and somen noodles lightly cooked in that soup, beautifully arranged in a bowl. Savor this local specialty of Nagahama's in the restaurant's old-fashioned, nostalgia-inducing atmosphere.
