[Gozan no Okuribi]

Chinese characters and shapes of fire float in the summer sky

Gozan no Okuribi is a summer tradition in which five kanji (Chinese characters) and shapes are drawn in flame on the mountainsides around the Kyoto Basin, burning bright in the night sky. The dead visit the world of the living during Obon, and this ritual is a way to see them off on their way back to the afterlife. "Daimonji" is lit at 8 o'clock in the evening, followed in order five minutes apart by "Myoho", "Funagata", "Hidari-Daimonji" and "Toriigata". The fires to send off the ancestors light up the night sky as if lamenting the passing of summer.
