[Nishiki Market]
The "kitchen of Kyoto", offering locally-produced food for 400 years
This market started business as a fishmonger about 400 years ago, when the Edo shogunate government granted it the title of Fish Wholesaler. Nishikikoji-dori is one block north of Shijo-dori, and along a stretch with Teramachi-dori as its east end and Takakura-dori at its west end, the street itself and side alleys leading from it are lined with more than 126 food stores with a combined frontage of approximately 390 meters. Nishiki Market is full of choice ingredients in season such as fresh and dried fish, Kyo-yasai (traditional Kyoto vegetables), Kyo-tsukemono (traditional Kyoto pickles) and yuba (bean-curd skins), and is always crowded with local people and visitors from further afield.
