[Former Mitsuke School]

A modern Western-style elementary school building built in the Meiji period

Built after the proclamation of the Education System Order by the Ministry of Education in 1872, the former Mitsuke School is one of the oldest elementary schools in Japan. The school first used temple buildings as a place to teach. After a while, the decision was made to construct a new elementary school building. It was decided that the elementary school would be a Western-style wooden structure adjacent to Iwata Bunko, a private library that had been built at the end of the Edo period. The school building was completed in 1875, and the opening ceremony was performed. Initially, it was a two-story Western-style wooden building on a stone wall base, with a two-story tower on top. Then in 1883, the attic above the second floor was modified to add a third floor, making the school building much as it is today. Inside the school building, a classroom and the teachers’ room have been reproduced just as they were in the Meiji period, and teaching materials and archives related to local history and lifestyles are also on display.
