[Kuroda Residence]

This residence introduces you to the lifestyle of the Kuroda family, who served as local magistrates up to the end of the Edo period

The Kuroda family served as magistrates for Honda Sukehisa, who was a direct retainer of the Tokugawa family. The great trenches surrounding the residence evoke the atmosphere of a medieval castle, and visitors are welcomed by a huge nagaya-mon gate. This nagaya-mon gate symbolizes the high status of the Kuroda family. It has been designated as one of the nation's Important Cultural Properties, along with the main building. Outside the trenches today you will find Kuroda Residence Museum, which exhibits artworks collected over the years from the Edo period to the Meiji. The plums within the grounds are in season from early February to early March. During this period, Kuroda Residence Plum Festival and various other events are held, and the gardens are opened to the public free of charge.
