[Horai Bridge]

The longest wooden footbridge in the world

Horai Bridge, which runs over Oi River, has been certified in the Guinness World Records as the longest wooden footbridge in the world. Because the bridge's length is 897.4 m, the bridge is also known as "the bridge without unluckiness" (the number 8974 sounds like that in Japanese), or "the bridge of longevity" ("long wood" sounds like that in Japanese). It is a bridge with a nostalgic ambience, which reminds people of old Japan and is a popular sightseeing spot in Shimada City. The whole island can be seen from the "Horai-no-Shimadai" at the end of the footbridge.
