A Great Buddha statue as large as those in Nara and Kamakura, with a gentle smile

Using a large gingko tree as a central pillar, the Great Buddha of Shoho-ji Temple was constructed by applying layers of lacquer-soaked hemp cloth over a wooden structure. This method is called "Mokushin Kanshitsu-zukuri", and this Buddha statue is Japan's largest of its kind. This Gifu Great Buddha is as large as the Great Buddha statues in Nara and Kamakura. The moment you enter the main hall, first, you will be overwhelmed by its size. Then, as you pay respects to the gracious figure in the quiet space surrounded by 500 Rakan statues, you will feel peace of heart.
