Fantastic scenery unfolds at Nagara River

Ukai, a traditional fishing method continued for more than 1,300 years in the clear stream of Nagara River. The scenery of cormorant fishermen in traditional costumes control cormorants with skillful handling of reins and capture sweetfish one after another in the light of the torch on the cormorant-boat illuminating the surface of the river is fantastic. The Board of the Ceremonies of Imperial Household Agency has given a government position Usho, to hereditary cormorant fisherman and the sweetfish captured at Goryo Ukai, that is conducted eight times a year is offered to the Imperial Household.

* The Ukai fishing on Gifu’s Nagara River is scheduled to be held every year from May 11th to October 15th.

* Boats are also available for chartering (reservation required, 15-passenger capacity boat from 40,800 yen). Please check the website for details.
Access From "Gifu-Hashima Station" of JR Tokaido Shinkansen, walk for approx. 2 minutes to Meitetsu "Shin-Hashima Station". Take the Meitetsu Takehana Line for approx. 30 minutes and alight at "Meitetsu Gifu Station". Take the Gifu Bus (counter clockwise of city loop) for approx. 17 minutes, alight at "Nagara-bashi" and walk for approx. 1 minute.
