Swim with lively dolphins at this floating aquarium!
Shimoda Aquarium is one of a kind: it has a natural beach formed by a cove in Shimoda Bay, and the building itself is floating in the sea. The best thing about this place is that you can play with dolphins that are kept in as wild a state as possible. You can feed them, give them signals like a trainer, and swim with them. These popular programs let you get right up close to the dolphins. (Reservation and additional fee required for all programs.) There are also over 20 show programs with sea lions, seals, penguins, and other animals every day, so be sure to check out the show schedules before you go look around the aquarium. In Aqua Dome Perry—a huge dome-shaped ship—you can watch a diverse range of creatures that live in the sea of Izu up close.
Formed by a natural bay, Fureai no Umi is the venue for Dolphin Beach (photo) and a wide variety of other programs (reservation and additional fee required).
Upper left: Feed the dolphins straight from your own hands and get a taste of being a trainer in Dolphin Feeding (reservation and additional fee required).
