Introducing Shomyo-ji Temple | Stunning Scenery of Japan | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

A beautiful garden which gives form to the longed-for Land of Happiness

If the Land of Happiness which is said to await those who believe in the way of the Buddha and remain true to its teachings really exists, then it must surely be a place as tranquil and beautiful as this... The Land of Happiness is the Buddhist utopia. The garden at Shomyo-ji Temple is this utopia given form. In front of the main hall there is a pond called Ajigaike with a flat bridge and a red arched bridge stretching over it. A wander around the pond and its bridges is like taking a trip to the Pure Land itself. Shomyo-ji Temple is said to have been built in the 13th century during the Kamakura period, and once flourished under the protection of powerful feudal lords. Many structures from the Middle Ages can still be seen in the temple environs. It is a place of stunning scenery which continues to heal people's hearts now just as it did in the past.

Travel advice

Except for when it is raining, guided tours of the garden operate every Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Many people come to watch the "takigi-noh" firelight performances of Noh theater pieces which are held within the temple precincts every year from the beginning of May. (Performances can be enjoyed for an additional fee.) The temple bell which hangs in the bell tower to the left of the main hall is the subject of the Hiroshige Utagawa painting "Evening Bell at Shomyo" from his "Eight Views of Kanazawa". It is a nationally designated important cultural property.
