[Suruga Lacquerware]

Lacquerware from Shizuoka, famous since the Edo period

The name "Suruga lacquerware" has been known across Japan since the Edo period, and came into being after lacquer artisans who had been assembled from all over the country for the reconstruction of the Sengen Shrine settled in the region and began to teach their lacquer techniques to the local people. The distinguishing feature of Suruga lacquerware is its various elaborate styles of decoration, with names like Kongo Ishime Nuri, Seirei Nuri and Sango Nuri. Many kinds of items are produced, from traditional goods like jubakos (multi-tiered food boxes), lunch boxes, bowls and vases to accessories, drinking glasses and ballpoint pens.
