[Mishima Taisha Shrine: A row of cherry trees and two "plum encounters"]
Shidare-zakura, somei-yoshino, and a rare species of plum, "omoi-no-mama"
Mishima Taisha Shrine is a great ohanami spot where 200 sakura (cherry trees) of 15 kinds, including kawazu-zakura, shidare-zakura and somei-yoshino, bloom in turn from February until April, starting with the kan-zakura. People also come to enjoy two very rare "plum encounters". The first encounter is with the extremely rare ume (plum) tree "omoi-no-mama", which gloriously flowers in four different colors of red, white and mixed. The second encounter can be experienced in the homotsu-kan (treasure hall), where visitors can see (a replica of) the national treasure "Ume-makie-tebako" (a treasure box with ume trees painted on it), which was received as an offering from Masako Hojo. Enjoy the graceful ume.
