A post town where the Tokaido and Nakasendo meet and then diverge again

Kusatsu Shuku is a post town that once flourished as an important point where the Tokaido and Nakasendo met and then diverged again. Of the two honjins (lodgings for nobles and goverment officials) which once stood in the town, one has survived to the present, and is now open to the public. (The official English name of the site is "Kusatsu Inn Headquarters, Historic Landmark".) There are many famous names in the honjin's guest book, such as Asano Takumi no Kami, Kira Kozuke no Suke and Toshizo Hijikata. Inside the inn, guests get a glimpse of life in the Edo period. At the "Kusatsu Inn Highroads Community Square", visitors can see many interesting historical exhibits, such as old documents about the history of the highways and the town, ukiyoe by Hokusai Katsushika and Hiroshige Utagawa, and a collection of train tickets from 1955 to 1984.
