[Enshu Men Tsumugi]

Beautiful cloth of traditional colors which reflects the four seasons of Japan

It is said that weaving in Hamamatsu City began in the Edo period as side work among farmers during winter. In particular, thanks to its warm climate the Enshu region was a district where high-quality cotton was grown. Work from spinning thread to weaving spread, and the region became a leading producer of cotton. Even now with the scale of production decreasing, "Enshu Men Tsumigi" is still being created by the hands of expert weavers. What makes the cloth so attractive is its soft texture and its variety of deep, calm colors, found both in plain pieces and in patterns like striped and "kasuri".
