Enjoy collagen-rich turtle cuisine in Hamamatsu
People have been eating softshell turtles ("suppon" in Japanese) as a nutritious and tonic food since ancient times, and they have recently also been receiving attention as a collagen-rich beauty food. It is said that softshell turtle farming first started on the shores of Lake Hamana, and there are lots of eateries which serve turtle cuisine. In particular, tokumaru suppons are carefully reared for three to four years on special feed in open farms, and their distinctively rich, fatty flavor can only be enjoyed at certain establishments when they are in season (around September to March). Be sure to give them a try if you visit Hamamatsu.
