[Itogawa River Promenade]
Get in the spring mood early with a walk by the river beneath early-blooming "atami-zakura"!
The promenade along the Itogawa River as it flows through the center of Atami City is an idyllic walk lined with places to eat and drink. The 58 trees planted along this promenade are all "atami-zakura", a kind of kan-zakura, itself a species native to India. This kind of sakura is noted for coming into blossom in the harsh cold months, much earlier than species like somei-yoshino, and the color of the blossoms is a dark pink which looks beautiful against the winter sky. The riverside takes on the color of spring just that little bit earlier than everywhere else. A visit to an onsen (hot spring) is a great way to have a bit more fun after a session of hanami.
