Introducing Mt. Fuji and dried radish | Stunning Scenery of Japan | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

A curtain of radishes which foretells the coming of winter

White radishes are lined up like a curtain against the blue skies on a fine winter's day. Mt. Fuji can be seen through the gaps between the radishes hung over wooden frames built on the sloping fields. Various vegetables have been raised from ancient times in the west foothills of Hakone in Mishima City since the soil containing volcanic ash is soft and drains well. Radishes, a symbolic winter Mishima vegetable made in the west foothills of Hakone (Hakone Seiroku Mishima Yasai), are dried in the sun until soft enough to be bent without breaking and made into pickles. This process is essential for maintaining the taste because the sweetness of the radish increases through exposure to the cold air. The drying of the radishes marks for Mishima town and the people the start of preparations for the winter.

Travel advice

Drying radishes can be seen in the west foothills of the Hakone Mountains (around Mitsuyashinden, Mishima City). They can be seen in general from late November to early December though the times vary from farm to farm. Please make sure not to disturb neighbors when touring and taking photos because most radish drying locations are on private property.

The pleasure of travel: Mt. Fuji and dried radish

Food such as vegetables, pork and beef are among Mishima's treasures blessed by Hakone's west foothills. People will enjoy the taste of Mishima potatoes, Mishima sweet potatoes as well as Mishima radishes, produced by brands crowned with the "Mishima" name and used in the many cuisines and confectioneries on offer. "Heartful Dining en France" is one of such restaurants offering various dishes using plenty of local produce. You can enjoy walking in Mishima City Park Rakujuen and along the nearby Gembe River in winter too, since the rich natural environment offers fine views throughout the year. Kakitagawa spring in Shimizu-cho, Sunto-gun is another recommended place to visit where you can see beautiful spring water.
