Introducing Shinsekai | Stunning Scenery of Japan | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

An exquisite world view emerges out of gaudy chaos

Hoards of billboards with flashy neon signs stand as if to compete with Tsutenkaku, the symbol of Osaka. Shinsekai, a downtown area in Naniwa-ku, Osaka, has a classic Osakan energy to it that almost overwhelms. The neon signs insist on their presence as if to say "the most conspicuous is the best", and along with the advertising slogans sung from the signboards, they keep on drawing the visitors in. Many people are also attracted to Shinsekai by the Showa era nostalgia on view round the area. A wander around the fantastic urban scenery energizes and revitalizes, with its mix of lively activity and bye-gone time-slip atmosphere.

Travel advice

This famous tourist spot in Osaka is crowded day and night with many visitors from all around Japan. It's fun just to look around at the attractive signboards in this idiosyncratic atmosphere. Visitors will find hearts warmed and appetites sated with the friendly atmosphere of the town and the reasonably priced food offered in every restaurant they come across.

The pleasure of travel: Shinsekai

Shinsekai is a treasure trove of eating and drinking options; every kind of Osaka gourmet is available. Visitors will enjoy various cuisine including original Shinsekai style kushikatsu (breaded pork skewers) at "Osaka Shinsekai Ganso Kushikatsu, Daruma", and Tecchiri (pufferfish hotpot) at the "Zuboraya" restaurant, which is famous for the large model puffer fish hanging outside. Then there's the dote-yaki (beef sinew stewed in miso), hormon-yaki (fried offal), konamon (various batter-based goodies), and a host of others. After filling up on these local foods, why not take in some of the comedy culture on offer that Osaka is so proud of? A theater crawl round some of Osaka's comedy halls in search of supreme comedy entertainment shows from veteran comic duos to the rising stars of the future is one of the city's fun experiences; a couple of the notable venues include the "Namba Grand Kagetsu (NGK) Theater" and "Dotonbori ZAZA".
