Introducing Sagano Bamboo Forest Path | Stunning Scenery of Japan | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

The color and sound of green bamboo invites visitors to take a journey into the extraordinary

Dense bamboo, reaching straight up on both sides of the path. The Bamboo Forest Path will make you feel as if you had wandered into a different world as it wraps you in the coolness created by its fresh green bamboo. The path runs for about 300 m, connecting Ochi Sanso Villa Garden near Torokko Arashiyama Station with Nonomiya Shrine. Reaching up high above, the bamboo softens the direct light of the sun and casts the path into natural shade, so walkers feel cool even in the middle of a summer's day. The rustle of leaf against leaf in the breeze is truly music for the soul. The sound is a constant accompaniment to the path's many other charms, and has been shortlisted by the Ministry of the Environment as one of 100 soundscapes of Japan which should be preserved.

Travel advice

Bamboo is an evergreen, so can be seen all year round, but is said to be at its freshest, greenest and most beautiful in fall, which is sometimes even called "the spring of bamboo". The path gets very crowded over long vacations and during the season for autumn foliage. Early morning is recommended for those who would prefer to take a stroll along the path when there aren't many other people around. The Bamboo Forest Path shows a slightly different face during the "Kyoto-Arashimaya Hana Toro" illumination event held in December.

The pleasure of travel: Sagano Bamboo Forest Path

Somewhere you definitely want to visit either before or after you take a stroll along the Bamboo Forest Path is the Tenryu-ji Temple World Heritage Site, which is famous for its elegant chisen-kaiyushiki gardens and majestic buildings in the Zen temple style. Besides immersing yourself in a world-class cultural experience, you can feel close to nature in the Sagano and Arashiyama area, which was a holiday retreat for the nobility the Heian period. If you head north from Sagano you'll come to scenic Takao, a place which affords the same chance to enjoy the four seasons. If you're looking to embark on a journey through Kyoto's cultural heritage while taking in the landscape, visits to the oldest tea plantation in Japan and Kozan-ji Temple are to be recommended. The latter is famous for its "Choju Jinbutsu Giga" ("Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans"). And don't forget all the top-notch gourmet cuisine unique to Kyoto, such as the "nishin soba" devised by renowned restaurant Sohonke Nishinsoba Matsuba, or the Kyo-kaiseki cuisine at Kyoto Wakuden by Kyoto Station.
