Introducing Shiosai-bashi | Stunning Scenery of Japan | Japan Highlights Travel, for sightseeing around Tokaido

Against the background of Enshunada, magnificent arches with a face for every viewing angle

A bridge of four arches stretching over the Kiku River where it flows into Enshunada. Seen side on, this mighty bridge is a slender line with regular, gentle arches. A bridge of the hanging floor slab type, made all the rarer by its sequence of arches. If you change your vantage point, the arches' appearance and overall impression of the bridge also change completely. Since all kinds of vessels have to pass under the bridge, the height of the shipping lane is a safe 9.5 meters, and if one looks up at the bridge from the beach below, the arches take on a truly formidable aspect.

Travel advice

To fully appreciate the power of the arches, view them from under the bridge. The 180-degree panorama of Enshunada which can be seen from the bridge also presents an outstanding scene, and since the bridge forms part of the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route, it's also perfect for a cycle trip in the ocean breeze. The "Enshu no Karakkaze", a strong, dry wind peculiar to the region, blows hard on many days throughout the winter months, and extra care must be taken not to get carried off by a strong gust.

The pleasure of travel: Shiosai-bashi

Shiosai-bashi is adjacent to Daito Sogo Undojo (athletic ground) and shares access with facilities like Daito Kaiyo Park and Daito Onsen Seatopia, so it is very easy to get to. While out and about around Kakegawa Station, other places which are well worth a visit include Kakegawa Castle and Kakegawakachouen (a flower and bird garden). Also, Kakegawa is one of Japan's most eminent regions for tea production, and the rich-flavored deep-steam green tea is a local specialty. At Grinpia Makinohara, visitors can watch the tea production process, try their hands at actual tea picking and so on, all experiences which are only possible in a real green tea region.
